Central South University (CSU) is situated in Changsha, a famous historic and cultural city, and the capital of Hunan province in south central China. CSU is a top university under direct administration of the Ministry of Education, a university of national Project 211, Project 985 and Double-First-Class (Class A) initiative.
CSU was established through the merger of 3 individual universities, namely Hunan Medical University, Changsha Railway University and Central South University of Technology in April 2000. The fields of study at CSU cover 10 branches of learning, namely engineering, science, medicine, management, literature, law, economics, philosophy, education and art. CSU has 30 schools. The University offers 106 undergraduate programs, and 46 primary disciplines authorized for the master’s degrees, 35 primary disciplines authorized for the doctoral degrees.
CSU is strong at disciplines related to non-ferrous metals, medicine and rail transit. 15 CSU disciplines including Materials Science, Engineering, Clinical Medicine, Chemistry, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Biology and Biochemistry, Neuroscience and Behaviourology, Mathematics, Computer Science, Molecular Biology and Genetics, and Social Sciences, Immunology, Psychiatry and Psychology, Geoscience, and Environmental Science and Ecology were ranked by ESI as top 1% of the world while Materials Science，Engineering and Clinical Medicine ranked as 1‰ of the world.
The University has about 55,000 full-time students, including over 34,000 undergraduates, over 20,000 graduate students and over 1,000 international students from more than 100 countries. CSU has 5778 faculty members, including 2 members of Chinese Academy of Sciences and 14 members of Chinese Academy of Engineering. CSU has established cooperative ties with about 200 universities and research institutions all over the world.
