University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) is a prominent university in China and enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide. It was established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1958 in Beijing and moved to its current location in Hefei, the capital of Anhui Province.
USTC is a world leader in fields like quantum manipulation, nanotechnology, high-temperature superconductivity, speech processing, fire science and life science. It is always ranked as one of the best universities in China. For example, USTC was ranked 1st among Chinese universities from 2008 to 2013 by Nature Publishing Index China, and 3rd in mainland China (80th in the world) by Times Higher Education.
USTC has accomplished several “firsts” in China. For example, USTC established the first graduate school in China, initiated the first class for gifted young people in China and built the first “big science facility” in China.
USTC now has 20 schools, 31 departments，several institutes in Hefei, Shanghai, Suzhou, Shenyang and Changchun, and 1 affiliated hospital. As a key university of the nation, it is noted for its advanced science and high technology programs, unique management studies and well-tailored disciplines in the humanities, and has 8 national key programs of first-level disciplines namely mathematics, physics, chemistry, geophysics, biology, history of science and technology, mechanics, and nuclear science and technology.
USTC has 2154 faculty members, 7400 undergraduates, 11000 post-graduate students, 5600 PhD students and about 800 international students coming from 83 countries studying in USTC for degree programs, among which nearly 70% are PhD students. In USTC almost 98% international students are supported by various scholarship programs. Apart from 33 bachelor’s degree programs，119 master’s degree programs and 93 doctoral degree programs， USTC also provide Chinese Language Studies Program for international students for 1-4 semesters.
